Wanderings: Duck River and Auburn Botanic Gardens
I’ve started a new youtube series entitled “Wanderings” where I basically have fun walking around beautiful and interesting places capturing images. Here is my first one of a place a few minutes walk from my home: Duck River which flows into the Auburn Botanic Gardens home of peacocks and Asian gardens.
Seven years too long — Refugees speak out
Refugee rights protests were held in Sydney on July 19, as part of a national day of action, to mark seven years since the then-Kevin Rudd Labor government sent the first refugees to offshore detention on Manus Island and Nauru. The Rudd government was also the first to implement a policy that no one who arrives via boat to seek asylum would be resettled in Australia.
Sydney marches for Black Lives Matter
50,000 people marched in the Black Lives Matter rally in Sydney on June 6. Since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991, there have been at least 432 Indigenous deaths in custody in Australia and not one conviction.
International Women's Day
Several hundred people marched through Sydney for International Women's Day. A large contingent of Latin American women, organised by DecoFem Collective, took part, highlighting the issue of feminicide and the growing movement against it. Several unions also marched, including the NSW Teachers Federation, the Australian Services Union, the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association, the Finance Sector Union, the National Tertiary Education Union, and the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union. Speakers took up issues of equal pay, domestic violence and climate change.
Climate Justice Now!
Several thousand activists rallied for climate justice in Sydney on February 22 as part of a national day of action. Passionate school strikers led the march and called for support for the next School Strike 4 Climate protest on May 15. Indigenous and workers rights were at the centre of many of the speeches given on the day.
Thousands surroud Parliament House demanding action
A few thousand climate activists formed a human chain around Parliament House in Canberra on the opening day of parliament to demand climate action February 4. The protest brought together a myriad of community groups and activists from across the country who called on Federal MPs to declare a climate emergency. The action is part of a week-long People’s Climate Assembly during which activists outside Parliament House are running workshops, performances and actions and discussing next steps for the climate movement.
Thousands march on Invasion Day in Sydney
10-15,000 people marched in Sydney's Invasion Day protest for Aboriginal rights on January 26. Black deaths in custody, the killing of rivers and communities and calls for recognition of sovereignty were key themes of the protest
Thousands rally for climate action as NSW is burning
More than 10,000 people, many wearing smoke masks, rallied in Sydney for climate action on December 11. The protest was called by University Students for Climate Justice and The Greens NSW David Shoebridge. For the past few weeks, Australia's largest city has being engulfed in smoke from bush fires burning across the state. The day before the protest, hundreds of fire alarms were set off in buildings due to the smoke. It was hard to see the end of streets because of the fire smoke and even ferries had to stop operating because visibility was too poor. Thousands of people are clearly angry with NSW and federal government inaction, support for new coal and gas mines and cuts to the fire fighting services budget.
