International Women's Day

Several hundred people marched through Sydney for International Women's Day. A large contingent of Latin American women, organised by DecoFem Collective, took part, highlighting the issue of feminicide and the growing movement against it. Several unions also marched, including the NSW Teachers Federation, the Australian Services Union, the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association, the Finance Sector Union, the National Tertiary Education Union, and the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union. Speakers took up issues of equal pay, domestic violence and climate change.

Climate Justice Now!

Several thousand activists rallied for climate justice in Sydney on February 22 as part of a national day of action. Passionate school strikers led the march and called for support for the next School Strike 4 Climate protest on May 15. Indigenous and workers rights were at the centre of many of the speeches given on the day.

Thousands surroud Parliament House demanding action

A few thousand climate activists formed a human chain around Parliament House in Canberra on the opening day of parliament to demand climate action February 4. The protest brought together a myriad of community groups and activists from across the country who called on Federal MPs to declare a climate emergency. The action is part of a week-long People’s Climate Assembly during which activists outside Parliament House are running workshops, performances and actions and discussing next steps for the climate movement.

Thousands rally for climate action as NSW is burning

More than 10,000 people, many wearing smoke masks, rallied in Sydney for climate action on December 11. The protest was called by University Students for Climate Justice and The Greens NSW David Shoebridge. For the past few weeks, Australia's largest city has being engulfed in smoke from bush fires burning across the state. The day before the protest, hundreds of fire alarms were set off in buildings due to the smoke. It was hard to see the end of streets because of the fire smoke and even ferries had to stop operating because visibility was too poor. Thousands of people are clearly angry with NSW and federal government inaction, support for new coal and gas mines and cuts to the fire fighting services budget.
