In possibly the strongest Sydney refugee rally this year thousands of people came out in the wake of the Nauru files to demand the government close the detention centres and bring the refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru to Australia.

We need a complete change of approach, one that welcomes refugees however they arrive, including by boat, and to provide safe pathways for refugees to get here from Indonesia and Malaysia. The recent rallies marked a new stage in the campaign, one that we need to build on.

We are seeing the rise of a movement that has the potential to make it too politically costly to continue with this inhumane policy.
